The historical event that David is remembering is in 2Sa
17:27. He is recalling an event which would not have been readily known by all
his subjects.

The way that the servants of David were treated shows that the
Ammonites did not understand how David thought and behaved. This was a recurring
feature of the way that men responded to David -- thus showing that the mind of
the flesh (seen in others) could not understand the mind of the spirit (seen in
David).
